Practical Genetic Counselling

Practical Genetic Counselling

by PeterS.Harper (Author)

Synopsis

The counselling of those at risk from inherited disorders forms an integral and expanding part of medicine, and advances are continually being made in this area of practice. Increasingly, common disorders are known to have a genetic component, and this book provides invaluable up to date guidance through the profusion of new information, and the associated psychosocial and ethical considerations and concerns. Changes for the sixth edition include full coverage of the implications of the human genome project for clinical genetic practice, the expanding societal implications of human genetics, and increased coverage of genetics and common diseases, including cancer genetics. The layout of the book has been much improved and modernized, with line illustrations redrawn throughout.

Media Reviews
Written for general clinicians, be they general practitioners, phsyicians, surgeons or obstetricians. It does not use arcane genetic terms, and previous editions have been of great value to many of my non-specialist colleagues over the years. I highly recommend this book to every practitioner who is now facing clinical problems related to genetic disease. The reader will find many ready answers here, as well as an excellent approach to managing individual families' needs in genetic counselling.

As I opened the package containing this book my colleague's eyes opened wide with envy. This was my introduction to Professor Peter Harper's gem on genetic counselling, and I soon came to appreciate my good fortune... Peter Harper's book provides the non-specialist with the basics of that knowledge and is a pleasure to read. I strongly recommend it to all involved in reproductive medicine and paediatrics. It contains useful information for many specialties and possibly most of all for general practice, where the widest range of conditions is encountered.
