The Reality of Management

The Reality of Management

by RosemaryStewart (Author)

Synopsis

The Reality of Management, now in its third edition, carves a clear course through the fads and fashions of management theory providing the manager with a practical and usable guide to managing effectively. First published in the 1960s, this thoroughly revised and updated edition finds the fundamentals of managing remain the same. It provides a unique long perspective on current managerial fashions, on the evidence of their utility and distinguishing what is new from what is reinvention. The Reality of Management is addressed to all managers who wish to learn more about their jobs for the practical reason of becoming better managers and to all students who seek to learn something of the realities of management.

Media Reviews
Reviews of previous editions: 'The real value of the book lies in the fact that it should bring to a wide audience...some idea of the contribution that systematic research can make to an understanding of the manager's task.' The Sunday Times 'This is a book to be welcomed by everyone concerned with the teaching of management. It should be required reading on every management course.' British Journal of Industrial Relations 'For those who want a short cut through the literature on management...Miss Stewart's book is an excellent choice.' Personnel Management 'A stimulating and thought-provoking book.' Office Management 'The most significant book seeking to round up the realities of management...since Peter Drucker's classic 'The Practice of Management'. Scientific Business 'Excellent...has not aged with time...still relevant...well laid out, good analysis and depth and extremely readable.' Senior Lecturer, Chichester Institute of Higher Education 'The most dilapidated volume on my management bookshelf is the first edition of this classic text first published in 1963. It is good to have a new edition...So is this the book on management to have? Certainly you could scarcely do better. Steering expertly between the the Scylla of the Drucker and Mintzberg tomes, and the Charybdis of the glib One-Minute manager and Excellence charlatans, Rosemary Stewart remains cool, rational, sensible and, what is best, helpful. Andrew Wall, Health Service Journal
