Published in conjunction with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for its centenary year, 1994, this historical text gives a description of the evolution and development of the physiotherapy profession and tells the story of British physiotherapy in a changing medical and social context. It traces the development of an organization from its birth to full maturity and follows the history of the Society from a group of nurses concerned about massage scandals in London in 1894 to the present-day profession with 26,000 members with clinical and administrative autonomy. It shows how a healing art became a science and highlights how external change, such as the World Wars, the conquest of polio and an ageing population, can affect an organization. The book includes many original historical illustrations. After an introduction which gives details of the five elements which shaped the history - professionalism, gender, the quixotic nature of physical treatment, rehabilitation and professional rivalry - the book gives an historical review. It then details chronological landmarks in the, profession devoting chapters to each 10-20 years with separate chapters for the two World Wars. This book is written for physiotherapists, and social and medical historians.
