There is an increasing awareness among clinicans and managers of the importance of outcome measures in providing a firm basis for clinical audit and research. Outcome measures are important when setting appropriate standards of patient care and they have a medico-legal dimension in the measurement and assessment of damage following injury. Outcome Measures in Orthopaedics, provides information on current instruments and scores, as well as pragmatic advice on which are the optimum measures. It identifies areas where there are inadequate numbers of outcome and where research is required. The editors who have a special interest in outcome measures have invited contributors with specific knowledge to write the first four chapters. The remaining chapters, written by those with an active interest in current research into outcome measures, have been extensively questioned and reviewed by small working groups of orthopaedic surgeons and other experts during a two-day meeting held at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. Thus this book is a collection of current opinion on the role and practicalities of Outcome Measures in Orthopaedics.
