In Polar Regions (Survivor's Science)

In Polar Regions (Survivor's Science)

by PeterRiley (Author)

Synopsis

This book examines the science skills you would need to survive in polar regions. It begins with a map showing where these regions are located in the world. The text then looks at this habitat's unique features and at how these features might help you to survive if you were on an expedition there. Aspects of survival are considered and each one is supported by a science activity which the readers can perform using everyday materials and equipment. For example, it shows you what to wear, how to find your way, stay safe and, if necessary, be rescued. There is an easy-to-follow activity on every other spread.

Media Reviews
It is always desirable to put scientific learning into a real, relevant, and hopefully enjoyable, context. This is the success of the 'Survivor's Science' series, which explores the science of each habitat and the application of scientific thinking in order to tackle its specific survival problems. The series is novel and very well thought-out. Formation and dynamics of each habitat are clearly explained, with perceptive use of illustrations and supporting photographs. A key feature is the use of activities that openly model the scientific enquiry process of observation. -- TES 20041022 Every page carries admirable relevant illustrations and clear scientific information pitched towards ages from 9 to 10 upwards. To be recommended for use at KS2 and KS3 for studying ecosystems and environments in science and geography. -- School Librarian 20040701
