Synopsis

This introductory atlas contains informative maps, with simple text alongside offering a basic description of the country concerned. Pictorial maps show animals, food, places and events that are common to a particular country. Flags and population numbers are also highlighted. Locator globes show the country's possition in the world. There is also an explanation of how the world becomes a map and an index of the world's countries and their capitals. A compass character introduces ideas and information through the use of speech bubbles. This atlas for young children aims to encourage children to learn basic map reading skills using grid references and scales, thus providing a possible tool for study at National Curriculum Key Stage 1 level for geography. A combination of maps, illustrations and photographs, this text provides an accesible introduction to the world.

Author Bio
Shirley Willis was born in Glasgow, Scotland. She studied mural design and stained glass at Glasgow School of Art and Illustration and printmaking through to post-graduate level at Duncan Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. She has written and illustrated many books for children, including those in the Buddies series. She has also worked as a book desiger and editor.
