Synopsis

'Flo looked in her paper. There was a war! Soldiers were very sick. No one cared for them. Flo wanted to help.' And so begins the story of Florence Nightingale's life during the Crimean War. Florence and a team of nurses rush to the hospital to help. But when they get there they are turned away, as lady nurses are not wanted. However, Florence soon shows everyone who's boss and sets about cleaning the hospital and making the lives of the injured soldiers more bearable. This is a uniquely simple, engaging and attractive first history book for young children. The simple text works well with Sue Shield's excellent and historically authentic illustrations.

Media Reviews
'True stories retold in simple text supported by speech bubbles make these books attractive to boys who may still be emergent readers. The comic-style illustrations of people and the necessary props for the story shown against a plain white background help to make understanding quick and clear.' -- Real Book News, Issue 11 20020501
