Synopsis

The Starting Science series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of full page impact photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find that they are involving the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, according to their ability. They are designed to be easily accessible to parents or teachers. This book in the series offers an explanation of how children use their five senses to learn about the world around them. It covers aspects of the National Science Curriculum for Key Stage 1 (levels 1-3) for the following attainment targets: AT1 - exploration of science; AT3 - processes of life; AT14 - sound and music; AT15 - using light and electromagnetic radiation.
