  This series covers different aspects of the lives of people of bygone times. Each book deals with a particular area of their existence. The series also provides general background information about the period. This book describes the various experiences of Americans as they pushed the frontier further westward. Detailed information on the first colonists, the fur trappers, the 49ers , farmers and cowboys is provided. By describing the ways in which the Americans established settlements in the New World - from the camps established by the fur traders and explorers, through the gold towns and ghost towns, the farms and log cabins established by the homesteaders, and the cattle towns - the author shows how the West was won. However, the author stresses that this was at the expense of the Native Americans.
