Synopsis

The Starting Science series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of full page impact photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find that they are involving the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, according to their ability. They are designed to be easily accessible to parents or teachers. This book in the series is concerned with both internal and external skeletons and their structure and function. It sets out to show how the skeleton provides protection and support for the body. Simple activities are included to demonstrate how bones, joints and muscles work together to provide movement. Other topics investigated are the way in which soft-bodied creatures move and the flight of birds.
