Alice Marlowe has always accepted her life the way it is. She enjoys her job as a sign language interpreter for the deaf, has good friends, and a mutually respectful relationship with her cat, Sampson. But lately, especially since the death of Vince, her twin brother, Alice finds herself wondering if something is missing. Prompted by nagging questions posed by Vince in their imaginary conversations, Alice is starting to feel as though she is always standing on the sidelines, acting as a means to communicate, but never the end. But then a late night phone call brings a beautiful, scared six-year-old girl into her life and Alice surprises herself by making a commitment to help in any way she can. To the astonishment of her friends and family, she applies to be a foster parent. Alice feels sure that this is what she wants to do, but although no-one tells her it will be easy, nothing can prepare her for quite how hard it will be
