Each introduces the context of members of society going about their daily work. Helen is a farmer who keeps dairy cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry and grows wheat. She farms organically, which means she uses no chemicals either in the animal feedstuffs or on the land - chemical fertilizer, for example. The book takes the reader through all the problems she encounters from the moment she starts her day at 7.30 am right through to supper time.
