Synopsis

Aims to foster in those looking for careers in business an awareness of the importance of finance and financial concepts. It will also help to develop skills enabling students to analyze and tackle problems of a financial nature which they might expect to encounter, and to communicate their findings to various interested parties. It should prove particularly useful for students undertaking courses leading to BTEC National Diplomas or Certificates in Business and Finance, Distribution Studies and Public Administration. The General Objectives referred to in the BTEC Specifications are the focal points of study as will be evident from the chapter headings, and at the end of each chapter a choice of problem-solving assignments is offered such as might be included in a typical BTEC programme. This treatment ensures that the book is equally helpful whether it is used as a class text in conjunction with tuition at college or for independent study. Within each chapter there is a mixture of learning material and student activities. The approach adopted is to offer comparatively small parcels of learning, each of which are followed by programmed activities of one sort or another, so that students are able to apply their newly found knowledge to practical situations as soon and as often as possible. These activities are, by design, of varied difficulty. In most cases they are simple extensions of the learning process but the assignments at the end of each chapter aim to be more challenging tests of understanding. Apart from the formal assignments, a combination of Activities in any particular chapter would also provide a useful BTEC Assignment. Throughout there is conformity with the underlying BTEC philosophy of integration with the other core studies. At certain points in the programme, opportunities for interaction and broadly based discussion are also introduced. In the final pages, a glossary of financial terms is followed by a short section showing abbreviated solutions to the problems included in the student activities.
