  This collection of authentic reading material is designed for students preparing for GCSE Spanish. It includes all the topics covered by the various GCSE syllabuses, and provides questions of the type that both Basic and Higher level candidates will meet in examinations. Analysis of syllabuses shows that all the GCSE groups cover a very similar range of topics. The ten main topics which are covered in this book are: personal details, home and family life, school, work and future careers, sports and leisure activities, shopping, food and drink, public services, health and welfare, travel and transport, accommodation and holidays. The reading material includes such items as signs and notices, tickets, menus, newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements and tourist brochures. The language of the text material reflects grammar and vocabulary items specified by each GCSE group. Introductory and discussion questions to stimulate oral work are in Spanish, to avoid excessive use of English in the classroom. The exam questions are in English, and test skills such as simple comprehension, identifying themes, drawing conclusions and comparing documents. Although chiefly aimed at GCSE students, the material in En Directo is also suitable for SCE S-Grade and courses with a practical bias such as TVEI and modular courses.
