  Medicines is an A-Z reference book which covers over 4000 medical preparations that are available either over-the-counter or on prescription. It gives chemical names, generic and brand names and describes uses and active constituents. Information is also provided on side-effects caused by allergies or other drug-related problems, and there are details on people who should not take specific drugs (for example, pregnant women, diabetics and patients with kidney problems). An introductory section explains what drugs are, how they are prepared and how they work. There is also advice on how to use drugs safely, charts of common problem areas with information about possible causes, treatments and precautions, a checklist for the contents of a home medical cabinet and instructions on the taking, handling and disposal of drugs that are no longer needed.
