Media Reviews
Nothing wrong with the highly successful James Patterson attempting a change of genre from the fast-paced thriller to the Love Story-style sad romantic novel. But there are problems. Leaving aside that highly ungainly title, Patterson's skills as a storyteller lie in his famously brief chapters (often as short as two pages) that usually end with a cliffhanger of some sort. While that approach works spectacularly well in accelerating tension for his thrillers, it is considerably less effective when applied to what Paterson's publishers describe as a bittersweet love story . It might also be said the success of Patterson's Alex Cross books is often due to his reluctance to clutter his hero's life with a slew of romantic problems and concentrate instead on adroit plotting - this, after all, is what the author does best. Here, books editor Katie is in love with the poet Matt Harrison. While he initially seems to share her feelings, he refuses to talk about the past and suddenly ends the relationship, causing her deep distress. Then he sends her a notebook that he promises will explain everything. It turns out to be the diary Matt's ex-wife Suzanne wrote for their baby son. While some readers will find the concept heart-tugging, there are also those for whom the saccharine content will be as hard to take as it was in Segal's Love Story.
