by David Lemmon (Author)
This is the second British Theatre Yearbook and it provides an illustrated record of professional productions that appeared on the British stage in 1989. The editor introduces the year by discussing particularly exciting productions and he reviews the most significant events such as the discovery of the Rose Theatre and the controversy over its conservation, the death of Sir Laurence Olivier and the theatre's rising stars who have come to prominence during the period. Productions are then covered in detail, with sections devoted to the West End theatre, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, the contribution of the London Fringe, the work of the provincial theatres and of the touring companies. Each section provides theatre addresses, full cast and production team lists, reviews and photographs. Michael Billington has contributed an article to the RSC section describing his own experience of facing the critics when he directed two plays for studio performance at the Barbican.
