Synopsis

The treasured stories of the Bible make one great story about God and God's people. In this retelling, each memorable episode can be enjoyed in its own right or read and understood as part of the unfolding story. Christina Balit's stunning illustrations underline the power and drama of the narrative. Starting with the beauty of creation and the tragedy of humankind turning its back on Paradise, the story continues with the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses; the struggles of the nation during the time of Joshua, Samson and Gideon; peace under Saul, David and Solomon; the prophets; the return to Israel after exile in Babylon. Finally come the stories of Jesus, stories that show people how to walk the road of love, peace, justice and eternal life.

Rock recasts the biblical texts in a simple and direct, yet dignified language that simplifies without losing the essence of each story. Balit's stylized paintings...add to the book's vitality. --Booklist (for the previous edition, under the title Everlasting Stories)
A bright, appealing collection of 100 stories with full-color, stunning illustrations and borders on every page. Rock's introduction explains the diverse array of narratives and describes the flow of stories, beginning with the Creation, through Abraham, to Jesus, and the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophesies...Balit, bringing a Middle Eastern background to her art, uses bold colors and ornamentation to add drama to each illustration...With a good balance of tales (66 Old Testament stories, 34 New Testament), this is a fine collection. --School Library Journal (for the previous edition)
