Jet Smoke and Dragon Fire , was Ashton's first published novel, and was shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Award in 1992, and the W.H. Smith Mindboggling Books Award in 1993. The first book in a trilogy, it was followed by Into the Spiral and The Shining Bridge . Charles Ashton has also written a story for younger readers, Ruth and the Blue Horse (1994).
