Media Reviews

This book is not for the faint-hearted as it takes a serious approach to a serious area of veterinary practise... The name of the book has been changed for this third edition to more accurately reflect its content... the content of some of the chapters has not changed greatly between this and the previous edition; however, the layout and formatting of the text has been updated and this makes the book seem easier to read... A particular strength of this book is that it often contains answers to the questions you want to ask or are asked by colleagues, such as, 'why do you give lactate-containing fluids to animals with lactic acidosis?' Not only does it contain the answers, it explains it in a logical manner so that you can truly understand the meaning. I have not come across any veterinary texts that provide such a depth of understanding on the subject of fluids, electrolytes and acid-base... It is highly recommended for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of these important areas.? The Veterinary Record 6/22/06

DiBartola is the gold standard reference book for fluid and electrolyte therapy and has been for almost 15 years. It provides an in-depth approach to all the topics addressed and the fact that it includes applied physiology allows a greater understanding of every topic. DiBartola gives a comprehensive explanation of the physiology of electrolytes and the causes, effects and treatment of their imbalances. It is a valuable aid in the treatment of electrolyte anomalies.
