by G D Turner (Edited by) (Author)

Synopsis

Designed for newcomers to sporting shotgun shooting, this book has much to offer more experienced sportsmen too. Specially prepared by the BASC for use with their Proficiency Award, it should give confidence to those new to the sport as well as encouraging high standards of sportmanship and respect for the countryside. Some of the aspects covered include shotgun safety; the basic rules of gun handling in the field, while travelling or at home; the parts of the shotgun and their respective functions as well as cartridges, including the effective ranges of both in relation to a particular quarry; the law as it relates to shooting, possession of guns, the game seasons, the schedules of protected birds and ownership and sporting rights; and the different areas of the sport, including roughshooting, game shooting and wildfowling. The book also includes chapters on behaviour in the field, the role of gundogs, and the part played by gamekeepers in habitat and game management. The section on quarry species and their identification is illustrated in full colour.
