by PanikosPanayi (Author)

Synopsis

This work is a documentary history of immigration into post-war Britain. Using a range of official and unofficial documents, it introduces students to immigrants, their impact and reactions towards them in post-war Britain. The book divides into five parts, following an introductory essay by the author. The first uses a range of documentation to illustrate the reasons for migration, demonstrating both the structural and personal reasons. Attention also focuses upon the social and economic life of the immigrants, demonstrating that while some have found economic success, others have remained underprivileged. Many immigrants hve tried to maintain their ethnicity especially through language, religion, politics and culture. Similarly, many immigrants have faced varying types of hostility from both the state and individual native Britons. Finally, immigrants have had a sigificant impact on post-war Britain.
