These books aim to offer a programmed course of learning for adults wishing to return to serious study and proceed into the higher education system. Based on Manchester University's access course, "New Horizons", they aim to help mature students to acquire and refresh their study skills, discover their potential as students and develop confidence and belief in their own abilities. The books are organized as a programmed text through which the reader can work, checking his or her progress against the study guides. They can be used as course material, for distance learning and for independent study. Although volume two follows on from volume one, each book can be used effectively on its own. "Reading and Learning" aims to give the adult student the effective techniques needed to cope with higher education. The book deals with being an adult student, organizing and planning your time, concentration and memory, studying alone and in groups, verbal communication, efficient reading, making notes, generating ideas and what makes a good essay. "Making the Grade" is designed for adults returning to further study, especially those with family or work commitments, or those in retirement, or planning a career change. Teachers in colleges of further education, extra-mural departments, schools, polytechnics and LEA institutions, will find it a useful teaching aid.
