Mrs Seymour's relationship with all the dogs is very close, and she records how she kept in touch with those which went to other homes. The lives of these lovely dogs is fully covered, from the springlike early years to the declining, often sick, last years. Touching at times, humourous, always sensible, the book is full of insight into the lives of the dogs and their relationships with the human families with whom they live. Much good sense and advice is there to be garnered by those who would do so. Phyllis Seymour is not only an active member of the national and international Golden Retriever Clubs, of the lobby group Pro Dogs, and of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (for whom she is honorary organising secretary), but is a registered dog trainer too, and president of her local training club (which is affiliated to the Kennel Club). This is in no way a training manual - but the layman will know a great deal more about why and how one trains a dog by the end of it.
