Synopsis

In this step-by-step introduction to the major ethical theories, this book aims to initiate the reader into the study of original texts. Over 20 extracts from primary source are provided, and each theory is clarified with an introduction and criticism. Exercises and essay questions draw out particular points, and a bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. The discussion sections, a particular feature of Michael Palmer's original philosophy course at Manchester Grammar School (the source for this book), link each theory to a contemporary issue, showing how philosophy is relevant to everyday life.

Author Bio
Dr. Michael Palmer has taught extensively in schools and universities on both sides of the Atlantic. Following the prestigious award of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the University of Marburg, he was invited to found a philosophy course at Manchester Grammar School, where he remained for eight years as the Head of the Department of Religion and Philosophy. The course attracted national attention, and much of the material covered was based on this book.
