Most people think that the Womens' Farm and Garden Association - or the Women's Land Army, as it was originally known - began with the World War II. Its origins, however, are earlier, before even the World War I when David Lloyd George was convinced that its contribution to the food campaign helped ensure that Britain emerged victorious from that horrific conflict. In fact it was in 1899 that a group of distingished women set up a Union to promote the training of similarly independent-minded women in farming and gardening. And now that it celebrates its 100th birthday, this book tells the history of the WFGA, an association which has included pioneering names such as Gertrude Jekyll, Brenda Colvin, and Madeleine Agar.
