Douglas Jerrold: A Life (1803-1857)

Douglas Jerrold: A Life (1803-1857)

by Michael Slater (Author)

Synopsis

Douglas Jerrold was the quintessential Victorian. Starting life as a seaman, he, like Dickens, one of his closest friends, turned himself into a famous writer and journalist, a friend feared for his sharp pen in literary circles. A prolific writer of articles and novels, he wrote many successful plays which made his rising popular fame equal to Dickens' celebrity as a novelist. When Jerrold died at the early age of 54, Dickens spoke the eulogy at his funeral, which was attended by a crowd that would only be surpassed by the attendance at Dickens' funeral. This book provides his biography.

Media Reviews
Douglas Jerrold . . . is a greatly underestimated literary figure, one to whom Michael Slater's richly detailed biography does ample justice. . . . Details about Jerrold's life, and many more, are put to the reader in a rich and engaging way. . . . For the literary and journalistic life of Douglas Jerrold provides, in miniature, a cultural history of popular and radical culture in the first half of the nineteenth century. As such, Michael Slater's study is essential reading for any student of the period. -- Victorian Studies
