  The idea which inspired this book was to drive around Britain by car, avoiding motorways, major roads and urban sprawl; to explore the little-known back roads through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world; and at the same time to take in a generous number of Britain's four-star attractions, such as Stratford, York and Edinburgh, while reaching them via some of the lesser-known but equally attractive landscapes. The reader can follow the route exactly, but should be prepared to get lost a few times, especially on the twisty country lanes. However, it is often the accidental detour that brings the rewarding chance encounter.
