by Crawford Little (Author)
The first section of the book paints the background to the salmon fishing scene today, with a look at its development over the years. The salmon's life cycle, and its exploitation and complex relationship with man past, present and future, are all covered. The tradition of tackle and techniques is described, and those men who have influenced the development of the sport are introduced. Most beats on the great salmon rivers employ ghillies, and their relationship with their gentlemen as well as their work, is fully described. The second section contains a detailed study of the great rivers themselves, from north of the Great Glen (rivers such as the Thurso, Helmsdale, Brora, Conon, Beauly and Kyle of Sutherland) to the West Country of England and Ireland. There is also a look at Atlantic salmon fishing in other lands.
