A Countryman's Year

A Countryman's Year

by John Humphreys (Author)

Synopsis

Join the dusty bustle of a threshing gang with steam engine and elevator, while the sheaves fly lightly into the maw of the drum. Come down to the marshes and hear the dry swish of scythes cutting the thatching reeds. Watch the hedge trimmer at work and meet the eel catcher with his wriggling harvest. See the falconer practise skills which were old even when Edward the Confessor was on the throne and dance at a horkey to celebrate the harvest home. This text celebrates the natural world and the old timers who lived in harmony with it. Share in their secret: in the way that the countryside inspired the human spirit where our modern lifestyle fails.
