Gardening with Silk and Gold: A History of Gardens in Embroidery

by ThomasinaBeck (Author)

Synopsis

In this fascinating and lavishly illustrated guide to the garden in embroidery, Thomasina Beck examines the intriguing parallels between the beautiful work produced by embroiderers through the ages and the developing styles of the garden. From Elizabethan times to the modern day, changing patterns and designs are explored and illustrated with engravings, woodcuts, portraits and a wealth of embroideries. Specially commissioned drawings add a further dimension, showing how these sources can be adapted for imaginative use as patterns today. Gardening with Silk and Gold - a revised, updated and lavishly re-illustrated edition of Thomasina Beck's 1979 classic Embroidered Gardens - is an invaluable source of inspiration and ideas for the modern embroiderer, and a compelling and informative read for the garden enthusiast.
