by Margaret Mahy (Author)
Margaret Mahy is renowned for creating vivid fantasy landscapes that enthral readers of all ages. In each of these five stories fantasy is at work in unusual and powerful ways. There's also a common theme of the pull that buildings have over people, whether they become houses in which characters find safety and comfort or prisons that can trap and oppress. These enchanting stories - by turns hilariously funny and unsettlingly spooky - have been taken from some of Margaret Mahy's best collections that are sadly no longer available. Their return to print will be welcomed by parents and teachers and will also be an exciting introduction to the work of a master storyteller for children themselves.

Book Overview: There's a resurgance of interest in Mahy's work, with new books and backlist coming regularly from HarperCollins and Orion. So few single-author short story collections have been published of late but there is definitely a demand for them in schools and as samplers of the wider body of authors' work. Fantasy is a perennially popular theme and there's heightened interest in the genre at present. Part of the specialliy-commissioned White Wolves fiction range for 7-11 year olds, written in consultation with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education. Each year group will have three stand-alone titles and accompanying Teachers' Guides to support guided reading lessons in the classroom.
