Carrickmacross lace is an appliqued needle lace. It originated in Ireland, first becoming popular in the mid-19th century, and enjoyed a revival towards the end of the century. Today, more than 160 years after its inception, the lace is again enjoying a resurgence. The basic techniques are methodically described. At the outset the making of one piece of lace - a handkerchief corner - is explained in detail so that while learning what to do, and how, the lacemaker can produce something useful. Advanced techniques are included too, as are a wide range of original patterns suitable for all levels of ability, and many practical uses. They include the traditional and the modern.
