People at Work in India

by IsabelleDauby (Author), JohnOgle (Author)

Synopsis

This is an examination of a variety of lifestyles and ways of earning a living in India as well as a view of its social and economic diversity. The work is intended as background reading for GCSE project work and as a basis for class discussion. Using case studies of real people, Isabelle Daudy begins by examining various forms of work associated with religion - which permeates all aspects of day-to-day life in India. She then discusses life and labour in the villages and in the world beyond the village. Finally, she looks at life in the city where rich and poor work alongside each other, concluding with the work of the privileged - from the village schoolteacher to the film star politician. Isabelle Daudy is an author and journalist who has travelled widely in India and John Ogle is a photographer who has worked for organizations such as Oxfam and exhibits his work widely.
