The RHS Desk Diary 2009

The RHS Desk Diary 2009

by Brent Elliott (Commentary)

Synopsis

The RHS Diary 2009 is illustrated with works from the collection drawings made by Chinese artists under the supervision of John Reeves (1774--1856). Reeves, an inspector of tea at Canton and Macao for the East India Company, sent a total of 755 drawings to the Society. The Reeves Chinese drawings were divided into two sets. One set consists of three folio volumes containing 127 drawings of camellias, chrysanthemums and peonies. The remaining drawings were grouped in five volumes covering a large variety of plants. The anthologies are from the RHS Lindley Library, acknowledged as the world's finest horticultural library. Each week features a full-page colour illustration and the diary includes the dates of all the RHS Flower Shows as well as national and religious holidays and astronomical information.
