Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age

by PaulG.Bahn (Author), JeanM.Auel (Foreword), Adrian Lister (Author)

Synopsis

Vital to the survival of Ice Age man, mammoths developed almost in tandem with humans before dying out around 4,000 years ago. Cousins rather than ancestors of the elephant, they roamed the earth from Africa and North America to the frozen north, where their remains are now most commonly found. A wealth of spectacular discoveries have shed new light on these Ice Age giants. This new edition includes the latest research and details of recent discoveries from California to Siberia. Lavish illustrations and copious photographs bring these astonishing creatures vividly to life.

Media Reviews
An excellent study in the natural history of an extinct group of animals. It is a work of scientific scholarship written for the general reader and is a highly recommended addition to the library of any Ice Age enthusiast. PRS Well presented with numerous excellent photographs, drawings and diagrams and will no doubt appeal to younger readers though it's certainly not a book aimed at children... the general reader will learn much about these marvelous animals. University of Bristol Spelaeological Society A lavishly produced book, with immaginative colour reconstructions, diagrams and photographs, all updated since it was originally published in 1994. It is an excellent buy for adults and children alike, who want to know more about one of the giants of our prehistoric past. British Museum magazine There must be some reservations about any book that claims to be definitive, but in this case the surprising thing is not the amount of information that the authors have packed in alongside the many illustrations, but the fact that the text and presentation is so very engaging.
