Synopsis

The northernmost of the Yorkshire Dales, Swaledale can well claim to be the most beautiful; certainly to be the wildest and most romantic. It is, a local writer claimed 'as close to Heaven as you get on Earth' and it has been celebrated by Yorkshiremen and others for over two hundred years. Stretching from the wilds around Muker and remote Arkengarthdale, through a landscape once scarred by lead mining, but now marked out by regular grey field walls and barns, and picturesque villages, to the splendour of Richmond with its great Medieval castle and its graceful eighteenth century bridge, theatre and houses, Swaledale is the classic Yorkshire dale, and here is a photographic portrait of it in all seasons and all weathers by a local photographer,

Author Bio
Mike Kipling comes from Scarborough, and having studied town planning at Newcastle University, became Assistant Area Planning Officer at Richmond. But in 1996 he decided to become a photographer, and now has one of the largest practices in the north of England where his work is widely published. He lives in Guisborough, Cleveland.

ROLY SMITH is a freelance writer, editor and consultant and the author of over 60 books on walking and the countryside. He was recently dubbed 'Mr Peak District' by his local newspaper. Based in Bakewell in the heart of the Peak, Roly was formerly Head of Information Services to the Peak District National Park - Britain's busiest - before taking voluntary early retirement in 1997 to concentrate on his freelance career. Previous to that, he enjoyed a 20-year award-winning career in journalism. He was chairman of the Outdoor Writers' and Photographers' Guild from 1990 to 2002 and was made an honorary life member in 2005.
