Synopsis

Petar loves music, and his violin keeps the whole village dancing. But when war breaks out, Petar, his mother and his brother have to leave the valley and flee across the border to safety, leaving their beloved father in the village with the other men. Pratima Mitchell's previous books include The Ramayana (Puffin), Rich or Poor? Tales from the Indian Subcontinent, Grandfather Singh Stories, Magical Stories from India (all Longman) and Celebration Stories: the Guru's Family (OUP). This is her first book for Frances Lincoln. Caroline Binch's illustrations for Hue Boy, written by Rita Phillips Mitchell, won the Smarties Prize. She is perhaps best known for Amazing Grace and Grace & Family. Gregory Cool, which she wrote and illustrated, was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. It was followed by Since Dad Left, which won the United Kingdom Book Award in 1998, New Born, written by Kathy Henderson and Starring Grace, by Mary Hoffman.
