The Royal Horticultural Society Address Book

by Brent Elliott (Editor), Brent Elliott (Editor)

Synopsis

Botanical drawings of medicinal plants, taken from books by two medical physicians, illustrate this address book. William Woodville's "Medical Botany" (1790-1793) contains descriptions and pictures of all the plants in the Royal College of Physicians' list of "materia medica" (plants used in medicine). His illustrator was James Sowerby (1756-1822), the major English botanical artist of his generation. Ferdinand Vietz was an Austrian physician, whose "Icones Plantarum" (1800-1820) was illustrated by Ignaz Alberti, an accomplished Viennese artist. A selection of hand-coloured engravings from each of these books illustrates this address book.
