Synopsis

When Dora's mother runs away, her soldier father has no choice but to have his daughter adopted. Raised in Wales and fleeing the attentions of her adoptive father, Dora goes to work first in London, then to a remote farm in Norfolk and finally at a fashionable summer seaside residence on the Isle of Wight. Here she meets Tom, a fisherman and a fairy tale ending is in sight. First, though, Dora must find her family and as their various fates are revealed, one question remains: is she like the mother who abandoned her? Set in the 1920s, this finely observed and powerful novel follows Dora's quest to understand her past - and to come to terms with her future.
