Synopsis

Emily had met Sir Charles Wyndham at a neighbourly party, but she had not exchanged more than a dozen words with him. So it came as a shock to learn, the next morning, that he had asked her father for her hand in marriage. Her father was in dire need of the financial assistance Wyndham had promised. Without this, the whole family would fall into the power of her father's abominable cousin Henry, who wanted Emily for himself.
