Synopsis

Kumar and Clark's remarkable Clinical Medicine is now back in a fully revised new edition and is more indispensable than ever! This student favourite has been praised over the years for the breadth and depth of its content and the clarity of its style and presentation - the 5th edition carries forward that tradition of excellence. Its pioneering reputation is further enhanced with the fantastic added value of the entire, fully searchable, cross-referenced text, being made available free to all adopters and purchasers. This will be at http://www.kumarandclark.com/, with access via unique user passcodes. There, students will also have access to: . Updates on key developments in clinical medicine . Self-assessment questions . An 'Ask-the-Author' feature . Related weblinks Starting with information on infectious diseases, genetic diseases, and cell and molecular biology and immunology, the book then moves on to cover the entire common and many rare diseases in the core 'body system' chapters. It also includes chapters on intensive care medicine, principles of therapeutics, as well as the important but slightly more peripheral subjects of nutrition, psychological medicine and dermatology. Throughout, the aim is to show the importance of the underpinning sciences in the understanding of clinical medicine and to explain clearly and in a consistent style the epidemiology, examination, differential diagnosis, investigations and management of disease. For this new edition, many new contributors have been brought into the team, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise as well as a fresh eye and approach; there is now a new chapter on ethics and communication, and there is new information throughout on the particular needs of the elderly. The colourful and innovative layout introduced in the 4th edition has been developed for the 5th edition to make the book easier to navigate and more pleasurable to read than ever before.

.. .clear diagrams and plausible explanations are a delight for any student. The breadth of topics covered makes it an invaluable reference for qualified folk as well, and surreptitous reference to it will greatly enhance your reputation for knowing everything, because it's all in here. I thoroughly and whole-heartedly recommend this book to any doctor or medical student. Final Year Student, Barts and London School of Medicine, Barts and The London Chronicle, April 2003
clearly structured, multi author book aims to provide the medical student with basic knowledge as well as to update the family pracititoner with recent clinical and scientific advances. In summary Kumar & Clark is an excellent and user friendly textbook for both medical students and clinicains. The new edition opens a gate to the vast resources and possibilities of the internet. THE LANCET Neurology, November 2002
book is an absolute necessity for medical professionals. It gives a excellent overview of most medical diseases and treatments, and yet is written in a very understandable way. It is invaluable for both pre- and post-registration healthcare professionals. The website access is particularly useful and the very first page contains a list of websites that have up-to-date information regarding the subject matter in their respective chapters. Highly Commended in the Medicine category at the 2003 BMA Awards, November 2003
is a book which will earn its modest keep on the bookshelf of every pharmaceutical physician with any clinical aspect to their role. The information needed by a doctor to 'hit the ground running' and provide sensible clinical input to team decisions is here. Dr Madhu Davies, Pharmaceutical Physician, November 2003
and Clark...The name speaks for itself!
July 2002 launched the new, 5th edition of Kumar and Clark to the forefront of our collective minds, a text for the 21st century with all the support modern technology and facial reconstruction can bring. This new edition, with its colour coded sections, a new chapter on ethics and communication, cutting-edge updates and full, free, online database access, still provides enormous breadth, depth and clarity in a text that bridges the gap between introductory and specialised. Bioscience and clinical medicine are clearly integrated to provide an invaluable source of knowledge for readers from pre-clinical to postgraduate studies.
This is, and always will be, one of those books that you are bound to end up buying eventually, it's all just a question of time... Medical Student, Mediscope - The Manchester Medical Student Magazine, October 2002
told me to buy it but I put it off due to lack of money now I wish I d bought it sooner! Third year medical student
by browsing through the book it was obvious that the authors had written a comprehensive textbook and still managed to keep it down to earth and very interesting. The topic is enormous and the difficult task is indeed to give the reader useful and relevant information without loosing him/her to a vast number of details...The best way to emphasise the worth of this book is simply by looking at the grades we received this summer which was an exam in clinical medicine. The students that had used Kumar & Clark just got better grades, I guess that says it all. Danish Medical Student, July 2004,
Within this vast tome lies all the knowledge you will ever need to know - at least for your fifth year OSCE anyway. The layout is kept simple, and thankfully steers away from having huge blocks of text. Clear and concise diagrams mean that the information is overviewed in a way perfectly suited for revision. A quite unique feature is the list of system-based websites which can be extremely helpful. Other additional features include little coloured boxes that play a useful role in gaining more understanding. Edinburgh Medics, a Res Medica supplement courtesy of the Royal Medical Society
