Birthmarks is Imlah's first collection of poems. Many are extended narratives whose themes are class, pretension, sexual self-deception and daily betrayals. The narrators include an aspiring Cockney, a deranged zoologist, a feckless racist and an unlucky foetus. Mick Imlah is a regular reviewer for the TLS. From 1983 to 1986 he was editor of Poetry Review . He now works as an editor on Departures magazine. Some of his poems have been published in the TLS, The Observer and elsewhere.
