Along the way, they attempted to arrange matches with tribesmen and inculcate them with British colonial values, with little success. The book, as well as being a travelogue, analyzes the spirit of rugby, its essential Englishness, and how flimsy Old World values are in the face of the New World, professionalism and ambition.
