Mellon Professor in theHumanities at Johns Hopkins University and the author and editor ofmany books and articles on early modern colonial British Americaand the American Revolution. J. R. Pole is Rhodes Professor Emeritus of AmericanHistory and Institutions, St. Catherine's College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy.
