This text is part of the IMPACT series, which initiates collaboration between parents and teachers to raise standards in English. The materials have been tested in schools and provide varied opportunities for using, applying and exploring literacy skills in real and fun contexts. They support the National Curriculum and satisfy the OFSTED requiremnts for homework in the primary school. The book contains pratical, photocopiable activities with specific non-fiction writing aims for Key Stage 1 that can be undertaken at home with adults. Each activity is illustrated and includes a note to parents or carers explaining the purpose of each activity, with a response slip to be completed and returned to the teacher. Teacher's notes explain the language concepts, suggest ways that the tasks might be undertaken at home and give ideas for extension activities. The book gives links with the National Curriculum as well as notes on the relevance of the activities to the Scottish and Northern Ireland English language programmes. The writing opportunities provided in this book cover many of the purposes for writing that children are likely to encounter in real life and include: lists and labels; postcards and letters; reminder notes and notices; advertising posters and signs including directions; certificates; ID cards.
