  This Practical Guide combines an explanation and interpretation of the National Curriculum requirements for art, with lots of ideas for delivering them in the context of today's busy primary classroom. The introduction sets out the importance of visual literacy to children's overall educational experience and relates this to the National Curriculum. Subsequent chapters deal with each Attainment Target in Key Stages 1 and 2, providing activities for a range of topics with cross-curricular links. The final chapters tackle assessment, visual communication in the school, art materials and tools, using museums and galleries and artists in schools. Emphasising the teacher's role as enabler rather than artist, the authors suggest a range of activities and projects that complement and integrate with other areas of the curriculum while developing the investigative and practical skills which are vital if children are to communicate both confidently and effectively through art.
