Modern Criticism and Theory: A Reader

Modern Criticism and Theory: A Reader

by Dr Nigel Wood (Editor), Prof David Lodge (Editor)

Synopsis

'In our era, criticism is not merely a library of secondary aids to the understanding and appreciation of literary texts, but also a rapidly expanding body of knowledge in its own right.' (David Lodge) This new edition of David Lodge's Modern Criticism and Theory is fully revised and expanded to take account of the developments of theoretical and general interest in contemporary literary criticism since publication of the first edition in 1988. Building on the strengths of the first edition, the volume is designed to introduce the reader to the guiding concepts of present literary and cultural debate by presenting substantial extracts from the period's most seminal thinkers.

Media Reviews
'The best introduction to literary study on the market.' Jonathan Culler, Cornell University 'The most un-boring, unnerving, unpretentious textbook I've ever come across.' Elizabeth Wright, University of Cambridge 'It is by far the best and most readable of all such introductions that I know of...The treatment of the various topics is masterful, even-handed and informative. I cannot think of a better introduction for undergraduates, to be sure, but for many graduate students too.' Hayden White, University of California at Santa Cruz 'I don't know of any book that could, or does, compete with this one. It is irreplaceable.' Richard Rand, University of Alabama '[Bennet and Royle have] cracked the problem of how to be introductory and sophisticated, accessible but not patronising.' Peter Buse, English Subject Centre Newsletter
