Higher and Higher: Skills and Practice for the Oxford and Areas Higher Certificate Examination

by RoyKingsbury (Author), Guy Wellman (Author)

Synopsis

Higher and Higher is written for advanced students of English who are intending to take the Oxford Higher examination, the ARELS Higher examination or both. In a broader context it also provides practice for the new Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE). Each of the 12 units is broadly based on a topic chosen to reflect the kind of subject matter that frequently occurs in the exams. Both the reading and writing skills required for the Oxford Higher, and the listening and speaking skills for the ARELS Higher complement each other in every unit. The book reflects the exams in the following ways: OXFORD - it uses authentic texts and a range of related activities to ensure comprehension, covers communicative tasks of relevance to everyday life e.g. writing letters, memos, messages, instructions, often in response to stimuli and includes dictionary work. ARELS - it uses authentic listening materials and provides practice in exam skills of giving a persuasive talk, responding to everyday situations, pronunciation, telling a story and producing grammatically accurate responses. Many of the activities in the course involve students working with a partner or in a group to share their knowledge and ideas. At the end of the book are two practice exams one for Oxford and one for ARELS.
