Five Themes for English

Five Themes for English

by Gervase Phinn (Author)

Synopsis

The principal aim of this book is to provide teachers and students with a global collection of literature for discussion, analysis, examination and, particularly, enjoyment. Material has been collected from the Caribbean, Australasia, North America, Africa, India and Europe, and is organized into five themes: True Romance , A Day's Work , Between Friends , Daughters and Sons and Hopes and Dreams . Various types of material illustrate the themes, including sad and despairing poems, rhymed verse, comic rhymes, gentle lyrics, compelling stories and accounts of real lives. The selected pieces are designed to stimulate questions from pupils, focusing on their own lives. These questions may refer to conflicts in the home and school, the joys, sorrows, anxieties, disappointments and excitement of adolescence, issues of identity, individual freedom, jealousy, prejudice and friendship. Throughout, the literature is illustrated by photographs. At the end of each theme there are follow-on activities, divided into ideas for talk and ideas for writing and designed to meet the needs of GCSE. They include suggestions for full and small group discussion, paired work and drama. The literature include pieces by W.B.Yeats, Grace Nichols, Pastor Niemoller, Charles Causley, Philip Larkin, Molloy Brown, Leslie Howard, David Sheasby and Dr Martin Luther King.
